How to winterize your car battery?
When it comes to winter session, Startup of your car or SUV or truck becomes a big issue. The main causes of this problem are your battery no longer going to fulfill the requirements up to that extent.
There may be many reasons, but mostly the startup problem happens due to your battery. Here I’m going to discuss “How to winterize the car battery“. If you will follow some basic precaution or if you take some simple action then your problem may be short out.
Clean your car battery:
If you are running your car with same battery for the longer time, then you should take a look at its condition. There must be a good connection between your car battery and starter to provide power for Startup. It generally happens that there is a layer of carbonaceous or corrosive metal covers the terminals of your battery. Because of this, the proper power transmission does not occur and starter not able to produce that much of torque required to start your car engine.
To get rid of this issue you should clean the terminals of your battery in short of some duration. Please make sure that you are following proper safety before going to take any action. As your battery contains acid and if it becomes in contact with your skin or eyes, leads to burn it. If your skin got in touch, then please wash your hand with soap and running water immediately. In the case of contact with eyes wash with water and reach to your nearest hospital immediately.
You can clean off corrosion with a simple battery terminal cleaner, which you can find at any auto parts store. It includes a wire brush for cleaning inside the battery clamps and a wire terminal cleaner you slip over the battery posts and twist to remove corrosion. Keeping your terminals clean allows the battery to send the right amount of power to the systems that need it. You should clean
your battery often throughout the year to help keep it in good condition.
Use a car battery charger:
Another best way to maintain your car battery is by using a car battery charger. It helps your battery to keep at fully charged condition. The usual lifespan of any car batteries is around three to four years. After that periods it, performance got down and caused problems. By using the battery charger, the probability of issues goes down.
Buy appropriate battery for your climates:
Another most important factor is that you should know well about your climactic conditions before buying any car batteries. Cold cranking is the most important factor you should consider if your are living in any freezing climates.
If you have recently moved from a warm climate to a cooler one, you should seriously consider changing to a heavy-duty battery in preparation for the colder months. Batteries can take up to twice as much current in cold winter weather, so having a battery with enough cranking amps is vital.
You Should Do this:
- Periodically test the State-of-Charge (SoC) and ensure that the electrolyte is at the proper levels.
- Float or periodic recharging will prevent batteries from freezing.
- If the battery has filler caps, check the electrolyte (battery acid) level in each cell. If required, add only distilled, demonized or decriminalized water to the recommended level, but do not overfill.
As far as my knowledge, I have cleared many points about how to winterize the car battery.
